Safety Committee Minutes – January 13, 2021

The Safety Committee met Via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) evaluating an SOP for campus-wide electrical shut downs, and (2) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors. There were no updates to the status of these items.

Three injuries were reported and the committee discussed prevention of future incidents.

Eight buildings were inspected and safety concerns and corrections were discussed.

New business included a discussion of employee COVID-19 testing , student arrival procedures and vaccine availability. The Committee also reviewed summaries of the 2020 annual injury data.

Safety Committee Minutes – February 10, 2021

The Safety Committee met Via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) evaluating an SOP for campus-wide electrical shut downs, and (2) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors. There were no updates to the status of these items.

Eight injuries were reported and the committee discussed prevention of future incidents. The majority of incidents were slips/falls related to snow and ice.

The committee discussed snow removal procedures, priority areas, custodial responsibilities and related topics. Further review of accident investigation reports will be conducted regarding the snow/ice-related injuries.

Safety Committee Minutes – March 10, 2021

The Safety Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) evaluating an SOP for campus-wide electrical shut downs, and (2) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors. There were no updates to the status of these items. The Committee discussed a new business item: considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings.

Seven injuries were reported and the committee discussed prevention of future incidents. The majority of incidents were slips/falls related to snow and ice.

The committee discussed snow removal procedures, priority areas, custodial responsibilities and related topics. Further review of accident investigation reports will be conducted regarding the snow/ice-related injuries. Additionally, the committee discussed securing isolation housing spaces after students have vacated, as students do not have keys to the spaces.

The  Committee met via Google Meet. There were no updates to the status of these items.

Two injuries were reported and the committee discussed the circumstances of the injuries and prevention of future incidents. Ten buildings were inspected and no major safety concerns were identified.

Safety Committee Minutes – June 9, 2021

The  Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) evaluating an SOP for campus-wide electrical shut downs, (2) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, and (3) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings. The electrical shutdown procedures are complete and under review by technicians for final changes, and extra snow blowers from the grounds crew will be made available to custodians for use in the area of South College Hall during winter.

No injuries were reported. Four buildings were inspected and no major safety concerns were identified.

The committee discussed issues with trash removal from select campus buildings, and the requirements for safety railings around the Kirby Sports Center solar panel project.

7/15/21

Safety Committee Minutes – July 14, 2021

The Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) evaluating an SOP for campus-wide electrical shut downs, (2) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, (3) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings, and (4) evaluating drainage at Leopard Deck causing slippery conditions for pedestrians at the southeast entrance. The startup and shutdown procedures for emergency power have been completed, reviewed and approved, so this item will be removed from current business. There were no updates on the remaining items.

Five injuries were reported and eleven buildings were inspected. The committee reviewed the circumstances of each injury and discussed prevention of future incidents. The committee discussed various safety concerns in the inspected buildings and the corrective actions/work orders submitted.

There was an update provided on the solar panel project at Kirby Sports Center, and the annual Safety Committee member training is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17th.

Safety Committee Minutes – August 11, 2021

The Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, (2) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings, and (3) evaluating drainage at Leopard Deck causing slippery conditions for pedestrians at the southeast entrance. There were no updates to the existing business items.

Two injuries were reported, and the committee reviewed the circumstances of each and discussed prevention of future incidents.

Annual Safety Committee Recertification is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17; any members who could not attend should contact EHS to arrange for a follow up training.

Safety Committee Minutes – September 8, 2021

The Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, (2) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings, and (3) evaluating drainage at Leopard Deck causing slippery conditions for pedestrians at the southeast entrance. There were no updates to the existing business items.

Four injuries were reported, and the committee discussed the circumstances of the incidents.

New business brought up during the meeting included (1) bike parking on the ADA ramp at the Pierce St. entrance to APK; (2) an observation of the Geology Department blocking Sullivan Road; and (3) stormwater drainage at Kamine Hall. The committee discussed potential solutions to these issues, including recommending a bike rack installation at APK, following up with Geology regarding their road safety plans, and considering upgrades to the parking lot adjacent to Kamine to prevent water infiltration to the building.

Safety Committee Minutes – October 13, 2021

The Committee met via Google Meet. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, (2) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings, (3) evaluating drainage at Leopard Deck causing slippery conditions for pedestrians at the southeast entrance, and added a new item to the recommendation list (4) adding a bike rack to the Pierce St. entrance to Kirby Sports Center. There were no updates to items 1 and 2. An inspection of the conditions at Leopard Parking Deck was completed and quotes are being acquired for the necessary repairs/improvements.

One injury was reported, and the committee discussed the circumstances of the incident. Twelve buildings were inspected and the committee discussed various safety concerns identified, as well as the solutions/work orders to correct them.

Updates to old business included: (1) a review of the safety procedures developed by the Geology Department found the procedures are in line with PENNDOT guidelines; and (2) a stormwater drainage pipe was cleaned out and a new gravel swale was installed at Kamine Hall, which has prevented water from entering the building after a heavy rain.

The Committee met via Google Meet, with some visitors attending in person. The Committee discussed updates to existing business items: (1) development of policy and procedures for building access to contractors, (2) considering purchasing a snow-blower for custodians to use at South College Hall and surrounding residential buildings, (3) evaluating drainage at Leopard Deck causing slippery conditions for pedestrians at the southeast entrance, and added a new item to the recommendation list (4) adding a bike rack to the Pierce St. entrance to Kirby Sports Center. Updates: (1) Current procedures indicate departments are responsible for vetting contractors entering College buildings; however, the Purchasing Department is making progress in establishing master service agreements with commonly used contractors on campus; (2) A snow blower will be stored in room 032 at South College Hall. No updates to items (3) and (4).

No injuries were reported and no buildings were inspected. No new business was discussed.

New business discussed by the committee included Shoes for Crews and snow/ice cleats for Facilities Ops employees.
